Afro-American Fragment

So long,
So far away
Is Africa.
Not even memories alive
Save those that history books create,
Save those that songs
Beat back into the blood-
Beat out of blood with words sad-sung
In strange un-Negro tongue –
So long,
So far away
Is Africa.Subdued and time-lost
Are the  drums – and yet
Through some vast mist of race
There comes this song
I do not understand
This song of atavistic land,
Of bitter yearning lost
Without a place –
So long,
So far away
Is Africa’s
Dark face.

Langston Hughes
Langston Hughes

So long,
So far away,
Yet the drums still
Beat long and low
Of a people
Taken from their native land
Of songs sung again
Of a history
Being rewritten.

Hope all is well and the weekend treated you kindly.
Peace,

So often do many of us forget our heritage.  The Tigris and the River Euphrates, the cradle of civilization.  Assimilation into another society offers no hiding place for those who run.  No matter how often we forget, Mother Africa has a way of coming back, a way of reminding us, a way of making us remember from whence we came.  Thanks.  Peace.

Africa as a place is so far away. But the Africa the runs in our blood, skin, hair, walk or strut forever leaves her stamp upon us even if we don’t acknowledge her investment in us.

Just a general comment to those of you who were kind enough to repsond to this post.  We have such a rich history beyond what most of our young people are aware of today.  But in our attempt to assimilate into western society we have lost much of who we are and given in to what others would like for us to be.

As a former teacher I don’t want to do your homework for you but this is how I responded to some previous comments on this poem that might be helpful.

Olá do Brasil aqui ..:):) Im speechless.

I believe that what is trying to be said in this poem is that when your away from your normal environment you are going to become a different person and you won’t neccessarily forget who you are or where you came from, but you won’t encounter the same expirences or problems with a different society.
